DUBAI // More than 50 Emirati couples are set to tie the knot at a mass wedding to be held in Zabeel Park next week.

The wedding, on Wednesday, March 27, will see 53 couples who work at Dubai municipality, Dubai Health Authority and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities say "I do".

All those getting married either have jobs in the same workplace or in one of the three government departments.

"There will be a colourful ceremony to mark the occasion, which includes performance of songs by a traditional troupe, folklore dances, and a military band as well as laser shows and fireworks," said Mohammed Al Nouri, director of the corporate marketing and relations department at the municipality.

"A large number of guests including dignitaries and relatives of the grooms will attend the wedding."

This will be the fourth mass wedding of its kind to take place in Dubai. Mr Al Nouri said the aim was to avoid extravagance and high wedding expenses that can burden newlyweds for years to come.
