Recycling helps to conserve rapidly vanishing landfill space, which is a key point in a country that produces one of the world's highest levels of per capita waste.
Recycling also helps to use natural resources more efficiently. For example, each ream of recycled paper is estimated to save 5 kilograms of wood, 80 litres of water and 3kg of greenhouse gases. Recycling aluminium also helps save a lot of energy and greenhouse emissions.
Extracting aluminium from bauxite rock uses about 20 times as much energy as recycling it.

October 26: Bahrain withdraws from a proposal to create a federation of nine with the seven Trucial States and Qatar.
December: Ahmed Al Suwaidi visits New York to discuss potential UN membership.
1971
March 1: Alex Douglas Hume, Conservative foreign secretary confirms that Britain will leave the Gulf and “strongly supports” the creation of a Union of Arab Emirates.
July 12: Historic meeting at which Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid make a binding agreement to create what will become the UAE.
