The Environment Protection and Development Authority in Ras Al Khaimah has closed an Al Gheel industrial firm after discovering soil-contaminating residues.

The closure occurred after an unannounced visit by Dr Saif Mohammed Al Ghays, the Environment Protection and Development Authority executive director in RAK, to industrial zones during the new year’s holiday.

His visit was to verify companies’ compliance with environmental requirements, conforming with the directions of the RAK Government and local and federal environmental laws. They aim to preserve the environment from any activities that may have a negative impact and on the sustainability of its resources.

The offending company lacked a system for the treatment and disposal of pollutants that was in line with environmental requirements.

Dr Al Ghays said the visits were part of the initiative "Environmental action from the Director to the Supervisor". He noted that another company in the same sector was honoured for its adherence to environmental practices in the manufacturing process, Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, reported.
