More than 30 finalists have been shortlisted for this year’s Zayed Future Energy Prize.

The selection committee met in Abu Dhabi for two days to discuss and evaluate 59 entries in five categories: large corporation; small and medium-sized enterprise; non-profit organisation; lifetime achievement; and global high schools.

The finalists for the large-corporation category, including Ikea and Panasonic, were chosen for their use and production of energy-efficient products.

Special consideration was also given to their ability to integrate renewable energy sources into their production lines through the use of efficient energy storage systems and solar energy generation.

For the non-profit organisation category, Electriciens sans Frontieres, Liter of Light, Practical Action, SolarAid and World Resources Institute were short-listed for their work in creating accessible off-grid solar infrastructure for poor families.

Fourteen schools from around the world that have included environmental education into their curriculum are finalists in the global high schools category.

The committee also identified five finalists for the lifetime achievement category.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on January 19 as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
