ABU DHABI // The second anniversary of operations at Masdar’s 100-megawatt Shams 1 solar power plant in the Western Region was celebrated on Tuesday.
“The second anniversary of Shams 1 signifies our progress to diversify the UAE economy and ensure long-term energy security,” said Dr Ahmad Belhoul, Masdar’s chief executive, state news agency Wam said.
“The experience we have gained through the successful operation of the Shams 1 solar plant has helped position Masdar as a leader in the renewable energy sector.”
The Middle East’s largest concentrated solar power plant, Shams 1 produces enough sustainable electricity to power 20,000 homes.
Local schoolchildren were welcomed at the facility for an open-house session on Tuesday to learn about solar energy. They saw the solar collectors, control room and cleaning lorries as part of a tour aimed to instil the spirit of innovation.
