Motorists and passengers who litter the roads while driving will be fined Dh1,000, the Ras Al Khaimah police said.
Six black points will also be added to the driver’s licenses, according to new traffic regulation issued.
The announcement came during a meeting of the Department of Traffic and Patrols of Ras Al Khaimah police with the general services department, the state news agency Wam reported.
Earlier this year, Dubai police announced fines of Dh1,000 along with six black points on the driver’s license if motorists were caught flinging cigarette butts from cars.
This was an increase on the earlier Dh500 penalty. Any member of the public caught littering would also be punished with a similar fine, Dubai police had warned.
This is part of campaigns across the emirates by police to stop motorists from polluting the roads, creating safety and fire hazards.
To help residents understand the extent of the problem, the Dubai Municipality released figures of waste it picked up amounting to 30 kilograms of discarded cigarettes from Sheikh Zayed Road on a single day in April.
