RAS AL KHAIMAH // Two tonnes of waste were collected by hundreds of volunteers for the 14th Clean Up UAE by the Emirates Environmental Group.

The 600 volunteers picked up rubbish with biodegradable bags and re-usable cotton gloves for the task in Al Jazeera Al Hamra.

“Looking after our environment is essential to preserve it for the future generation. We have seen dedicated participation from organisations, governments, students, families and individuals every year and are glad to get such a great response. Together, we can make a change,” said Habiba Al Mar’ashi, chairwoman of Emirates Environmental Group.

“This campaign was launched with an aim in mind, to unify the people, create awareness in the minds of the young and old while advocating the importance of sustainable living. Through this platform, we are able to grow it year after year.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Kayed Al Qasimi, the president of the Department of Economic Development in Ras Al Khaimah, attended the event. The first session of Clean Up UAE began in December 2002, and included Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

“Despite starting off with humble beginnings, I am proud to say that our campaign has grown exponentially over the years. This year, we will record the highest-ever participation of 125,000 volunteers,” added Ms Al Mar’ashi.
