Emiratis travelling to India can now get a visa on arrival at the airport, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi announced on Sunday.

The visas on arrival last 60 days and allow for two entries into the South-Asian country for business, tourism, conferences and medical purposes.

The service, backdated from November 16, will be available at six international airports including Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Visa on arrival will only be available to Emiratis who have previously obtained an e-visa or standard paper visa for India, irrespective if they actually travelled to India.

Emiratis travelling to India for the first time may be advised to apply for an e-visa or standard paper visa, the statement from the embassy said.

On Sunday, the embassy said the Indian government's decision was aimed at strengthening tourism, trade and strategic ties between the two countries.
