ABU DHABI // A group of 30 Emirati volunteers took initiative yesterday when they organised a grassroots National Day event at Marina Mall.
The citizens, who regularly volunteer for Takatof, the Programme for Social Volunteering, put together an Emirati show for Marina mall visitors which included local music, poetry, and a rendition of the national anthem.
“We wanted to create an event which wasn’t set up by the government, organisations or companies,” said Jawaher Khalifa, 17, the brainchild of the event who thought it up while volunteering at the Abu Dhabi Science Festival.
“It was very important to hold it here so we could show the expats and tourists the love we have for our country.”
One of those tourists was Noha Ma Ho, 37.
“I chose the UAE because I am Muslim and it’s very lucky and nice to be here during National Day,” said Mr Ma Ho, from China. “I want to tell everyone in the UAE happy birthday.”
Other passers-by were also treated to falling balloons and a cake decorated in the colours of the Emirati flag.
“It’s the least we can do for our country,” said Anes Mansoor Al Dhali, 35, who helped Ms Jawaher realise her idea.
“When she came to me with the idea I said this is the least we can do for the Emirates.”
Saying there were already plenty of big events outdoors, Mr Al Dhali was happy to be a part of something created by every day Emiratis.
“To me, it’s the young men and women of the emirates giving a small present back to the nation.”
Ms Jawaher said that more Emiratis should take the initiative to be creative.
“I am only 17 and I organised all of this with little help. Anyone can do this, and they should.”
