An Emirati man helped save the lives of 100 men after he spotted a fire at a construction company building where the men were sleeping.
Eighteen-year-old Ibrahim Ali was driving to Ajman from Dubai when he saw smoke rising from a building on Sheikh Ammar Road, according to Ajman’s Civil Defence Director-general Brig Abdulaziz Al Shamsi.
He stopped his car and rushed to the burning building in Al Rawda 3 before calling Civil Defence.
“But instead of waiting, he did a heroic act that anyone in such situation must do, he broke the doors and windows and found that 100 workers were sleeping at the time and were not even aware of the fire.
“He got them all out of the burning building and saved their lives before Civil defence teams arrived and controlled the fire,” said Brig Al Shamsi.
Brig Al Shamsi said that was the first of two incidents whereby a civilian's quick action helped save a life this month.
He said in the second incident, another Emirati man — Hamad Al Hosani — was driving towards a government department building in Al Hamidiya area, when he spotted a girl waving from the window of a second floor apartment.
"He saw the smoke coming from the building then looked up to see the young woman waving, he stopped and listened to what she was saying and knew that there was a fire in the flat," Brig Al Shamsi said.
Mr Al Hosani called Civil Defence but also initiated a rescue operation on his own.
“He tried to get into the house but the heavy smoke was in his way so he couldn’t. But he didn't give up: he went out again and managed to get a ladder then climbed it to the 15-year-old’s window and got her out,” said Brig Al Shamsi.
Fire fighters also saved two more people from the flat who were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Brig Al Shamsi awarded the two men for their bravery and attempts to save the lives of others.
