DUBAI // A 31-year-old threatened to burn a man and his car and then stab a police officer with a sword, Dubai Criminal Court has heard.

Prosecutors said that Emirati defendant M S bought a used car from the victim, fellow Emirati E A, 21, for Dh15,000 in March.

“I sold him my Nissan Patrol and he handed me the money but when we went to check the car to finalise the sale and register the car in his name, the car didn’t pass the test,” the victim said. “I told him I can’t sell it to him but he insisted.”

The defendant then called a friend to help register the car.

“After he made the call I asked him to take his money and pay me Dh1,000 as a down payment, which he did.”.

Thirty minutes later, EA said the defendant accused him of stealing Dh8,000 from him.

When police arrived and tried to apprehend M S, he allegedly became violent and assaulted the arresting officer before cutting his wrist in an attempt to end his life.

M S was charged with two counts of issuing threats – one against E A in which he threatened to burn him and his vehicle and another against his arresting officer where he told him he would stab him.

He is also charged with assaulting a police officer and attempting suicide.

The man denied the charges in court and a verdict is due on October 29.
