ABU DHABI // Eight teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15, have been referred to court on charges of stealing 11 motorcycles from the impound lot in Al Mafraq, and driving them on the motorway without a licence.

They were also charged with the attempted theft of other vehicles.

Abu Dhabi attorney general Ali Al Balushi said that the incident should not be taken lightly by education institutions because it reflected the audacity of juveniles who dared to challenge the authority of law and trespass on police property.

He said that not only would the accused be prosecuted, but the educational gaps leading to this serious incident would also be examined in a systemised method through collaboration among legal and educational authorities.

“The community looks up to the family as the main pillar in building the future of our children,” he said, urging guardians not to be lenient with their children in teaching them to respect the authority of the parents, teachers and the authorities regulating the community.

The Family Prosecution department’s investigations showed that the youths had broken into the impound several times by jumping the fence.

They looked for functioning motorcycles then dug under the fence to take them out. On the day of the incident, the accused were able to take the bikes out but could start ony one of them. The police officer guarding the lot caught one of the accused while the remaining seven escaped.
