ABU DHABI // Parents of pupils at state schools in the capital are welcoming the introduction of uniforms for the coming year.
Abu Dhabi Education Council has unveiled its new standardised attire for children in all grades.
Twelve schools will initially adopt the clothing from September so the council can test the changes. It will then roll out the uniform of a light blue shirt and navy blue blazers based on feedback.
The step was taken to improve the image of children in state schools by ensuring pupils adhered to a similar standard of dress.
The uniforms were chosen after consultation with principals and take into consideration the climate and international trends.
“The new design is comfortable, fits both genders and different age categories, carries Adec’s logo and includes both summer and winter costumes,” said Mohammad Salem Al Dhaheri, executive director of school operations at the council.
Nursery pupils will have the option of long or short-sleeved shirts, trousers or shorts, with a winter blazer and jacket.
Girls have a long sleeved shirt, full dress or skirt with a blazer and scarf.
Samira Al Nuaimi, a mother of five children at state schools, welcomed the new dress code.
“My children are in different schools and they all have different uniforms,” Ms Al Nuaimi said.
“Depending on the supplier contracted by the school, we were never sure if the material was good or the cost too high.”
Having one supplier for all schools that is endorsed by Adec will ensure parents are not cheated, she said.
The authority said the uniform would be available at all uniform stores and cost about Dh70.
