ABU DHABI // Cranleigh Abu Dhabi school celebrated the end of its inaugural year by launching a photography exhibition and an accompanying coffee-table book of its busy pupils.
A preview of the exhibition, which features about 65 large photographs displayed in the junior school's main lobby, was held for parents on Tuesday and is open to the public by appointment until July 9. The 176-page hardcover book, called Cranleigh Abu Dhabi: The Story So Far, is being sold for Dh200.
“We wanted to just let the pictures speak for themselves,” headmaster Brendan Law said.
“In terms of the school, what do we value the most? It’s the children, they come first. They really are important to us. What you’ll see is not so much the history, what you’ll see is the vision become a reality, and that’s really the purpose of the book.”
Nancy McManus, who teaches second-year pupils at the school, was among the first to get a glimpse of the photos, which were shot by her Cranleigh colleagues Julian John, Simon Johnson and Craig Nichol.
“It’s bringing back a lot of wonderful memories actually,” said Ms McManus, a New Zealander who is also deputy head of pre-prep.
“It’s hard to believe how much we’ve managed to squeeze into nine months of operation. I think there’s an overwhelming feeling about the photos.”
The photographs show pupils participating in one of dozens of extra-curricular and after-school activities offered at the school.
The school opened in August with 64 teachers and 637 pupils between the ages of 3 and 14. Next academic year, it is expecting an enrolment of more than 1,000 pupils between the ages of 3 and 15, and is adding another 36 teachers to its payroll.
In the new academic year Cranleigh will open the senior school, auditoriums, athletic facilities and housing for teachers, a large apartment complex located across the street from the campus.
Mr Law said plans to open boarding facilities in 2017, making the school the only boarding school in the emirate, were still under way. There are also continuing discussions about the potential establishment of an all-girls school in the near future.

Dubai-based singer Anita Williams will open the night with a set of covers and swing, jazz and blues standards that made her an in-demand singer across the emirate. The Irish singer has been performing in Dubai since 2008 at venues such as MusicHall and Voda Bar. Her Jazz Garden appearance is career highlight as she will use the event to perform the original song Big Blue Eyes, the single from her debut solo album, due for release soon.

Abdul Jabar Qahraman was meeting supporters in his campaign office in the southern Afghan province of Helmand when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded on Wednesday.
The blast in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah killed the Afghan election candidate and at least another three people, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak told reporters. Another three were wounded, while three suspects were detained, he said.
The Taliban – which controls much of Helmand and has vowed to disrupt the October 20 parliamentary elections – claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr Qahraman was at least the 10th candidate killed so far during the campaign season, and the second from Lashkar Gah this month. Another candidate, Saleh Mohammad Asikzai, was among eight people killed in a suicide attack last week. Most of the slain candidates were murdered in targeted assassinations, including Avtar Singh Khalsa, the first Afghan Sikh to run for the lower house of the parliament.
The same week the Taliban warned candidates to withdraw from the elections. On Wednesday the group issued fresh warnings, calling on educational workers to stop schools from being used as polling centres.

Three ways to limit your social media use
Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.
1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.
2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.
3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.
