A private school in the capital has alerted parents after a suspected case of tuberculosis was identified.

Brighton College Abu Dhabi said a member of the school community was receiving medical treatment with a suspected case of the infectious lung disease.

In a letter to parents on Wednesday, Headmaster Simon Corns urged parents to take their children to the city's Disease Prevention and Screening Centre at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

He said Department of Health Abu Dhabi was liaising with the clinic.

He said there was "no risk to the community at present".

The school's operator Bloom Education told The National that "a standard tuberculous test was conducted on a member of staff from the school. The initial result was inconclusive, but has since been proved negative".

It is understood that the letter was sent to the parents of a limited group of pupils who will need to be screened as a precaution.

Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious disease that affects the lungs and is spread from one person to another, mainly through coughs and sneezes. While many people carry the infection harmlessly, the active disease can be fatal if untreated.

"The school was instructed to notify the parents of those pupils who had continuous close contact with the affected person and advise them to be screened for TB," Mr Corns said.

"The screening is only for the pupil or staff member, as the family members have not had continuous close contact with the affected person.

"The screening will be provided by a specialised medical team in accordance to the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.

"The required screenings will include - assessment of the condition, a skin or blood test as well as any subsequent tests that may be decided upon the physician’s evaluation."
