Dubai Municipality has begun installing its “Makani” (My location) address signs across the emirate.
According to Al Ittihad, The National's sister publication, the project, being carried out in phases, will cover 40,000 buildings in 58 areas, said Abdul Hakim Malik, director of the Municipality's GIS Department.
He said Makani signs will be put up at the entrances of buildings, warehouses, hotels, schools, mosques and farms in the emirate.
The ten-digit co-ordinates allow users to accurately locate the entrance of buildings. They contain a QR code which is viewable on a digital map using the Makani app or any other geolocation app downloadable on smartphones.
The system has also been implemented in metro stations. It will also be used by government entities such as Dubai Police, to provide the emergency service with an accurate location of incidents.
