A two-lane tunnel linking Airport Road and Marrakech Road in Dubai will open to traffic on Friday.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority said the new tunnel will facilitate smooth traffic flow in the densely populated district.
The tunnel is part of a Dh404 million Airport Road Improvement Project is aimed at easing congestion for motorists and accommodate projected growth in the number of passengers using the Dubai International Airport — that is estimated to increase to 92 million by 2020.

Two bridges were constructed as well as a ramp connecting the Airport-Marrakech roads junction with a bridge leading to Terminal 3. It will remove the need to wait at traffic lights.
Nabeel Salih, director of Roads at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said the road improvements would cut waiting time at the junction from seven minutes to just one.
All four bridges have since opened.
Once complete, the project will boost the capacity of Airport Road by 5,000 vehicles per hour, improve traffic safety and reduce travel time on the road from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street from 30 minutes to five, the RTA said.
