Dubai // With the Race to Dubai in full swing, final preparations are being made for the Dubai World Championships, the climax to the European Golf Tour that will be played at Jumeirah Golf Estates. The top 60 golfers on the tour, including stars such as Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy, winner of the Dubai Desert Classic, will earn spots in the event, taking place on November 19-22.
The tournament will be the first competition played on the "Earth" course designed by Greg Norman. Bob Knott, senior course manager, said the layout was complete and he was putting finishing touches to the greens and landscaping following consultation with Norman and European tour officials. "We had a meeting ... to finalise the fairway lines and details of the course," he said. "We have recently laid sand in the bunkers and are planting the last 80 of the 3,500 trees that line the course."
The latest addition to the course is a colony of 19 flamingoes that live on a lake adjoining the 17th hole. It was announced yesterday that DP World, the global marine terminal operator, will be the main sponsor for the event. Other partnerships include Atlantis as the official hotel, Rolex as the premier sponsor and Polo Ralph Lauren as the official outfitter. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World and DP World, said the event would provide a boost to tourism.
"With close to 40,000 golf enthusiasts ... already registered for tickets and a worldwide television audience of millions, this is a golden opportunity to attract tourists, generate revenue, and showcase Dubai to the world," he said. tbrooks@thenational.ae

Abdul Jabar Qahraman was meeting supporters in his campaign office in the southern Afghan province of Helmand when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded on Wednesday.
The blast in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah killed the Afghan election candidate and at least another three people, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak told reporters. Another three were wounded, while three suspects were detained, he said.
The Taliban – which controls much of Helmand and has vowed to disrupt the October 20 parliamentary elections – claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr Qahraman was at least the 10th candidate killed so far during the campaign season, and the second from Lashkar Gah this month. Another candidate, Saleh Mohammad Asikzai, was among eight people killed in a suicide attack last week. Most of the slain candidates were murdered in targeted assassinations, including Avtar Singh Khalsa, the first Afghan Sikh to run for the lower house of the parliament.
The same week the Taliban warned candidates to withdraw from the elections. On Wednesday the group issued fresh warnings, calling on educational workers to stop schools from being used as polling centres.

Also on December 7 to 9, the third edition of the Gulf Car Festival (www.gulfcarfestival.com) will take over Dubai Festival City Mall, a new venue for the event. Last year's festival brought together about 900 cars worth more than Dh300 million from across the Emirates and wider Gulf region – and that first figure is set to swell by several hundred this time around, with between 1,000 and 1,200 cars expected. The first day is themed around American muscle; the second centres on supercars, exotics, European cars and classics; and the final day will major in JDM (Japanese domestic market) cars, tuned vehicles and trucks. Individuals and car clubs can register their vehicles, although the festival isn’t all static displays, with stunt drifting, a rev battle, car pulls and a burnout competition.
