DUBAI // An inspector for the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority asked for a Dh10,000 bribe to cancel a cafeteria owner’s fines, a court heard on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Emirati is accused of asking for the bribe in exchange for cancelling the fines for the illegal use of parking spots.

Dubai Criminal Court was told that the inspector asked an Emirati policeman to mediate between him and the Indian cafeteria owner.

“He told me that he would issue fines against the cafeteria for using four parking spots exclusively for customers without obtaining a licence, and told me to inform the owner that if he pays Dh10,000, he would cancel the fines,” said the 38-year-old police officer.

Prosecutors said the policeman asked the owner to give him Dh500 for his mediation work.

The cafeteria owner reported the incident at Al Rafaa police station, and officers asked him to play along so that they could arrest the two suspects.

The inspector was charged with seeking a bribe while the policeman was charged for being a mediator.

The policeman denied the charge in court yesterday. The inspector did not attend court.

A verdict is expected on October 11.
