ABU DHABI // Dubai Municipality has donated Dh100,000 to Al Noor Training Centre for children with disabilities.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, the municipality’s director general, and his officials visited the centre, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Social Affairs, this week. They expressed their desire to support humanitarian and charitable efforts by various organisations.

Mr Lootah said the donation was part of the municipality’s commitment to social causes.

According to the World Health Organisation, about 15 to 20 per cent of children had physical or mental disabilities, Mr Lootah said.

“Ten per cent of children need special attention and care. Given these statistics, the service rendered by centres like Al Noor are doing a great job to benefit society. We do recognise and will find ways to support these efforts,” he said.

The centre, which opened in 1981, provides disabled children, regardless of their background, the same opportunities afforded to the able bodied.

The centre started with eight children and now houses 300.

It was donated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
