DUBAI // An inmate at Dubai Central Prison attempted to kill a fellow prisoner by stabbing him three times, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
Pakistani S A was not present in court to enter a plea against an attempted murder charge.
On July 21 last year, 26-year-old victim A Y, also Pakistani, was reciting the Quran in his cell when he asked S A, who was arguing with another inmate, to lower his voice, prosecutors said.
“They were arguing and I just asked him to lower his voice because he was disturbing me as I read the Quran, then later after breakfast I saw him as I was returning to my cell and he told me not to interfere between him and the other prisoner. I told him I was sorry,” said the victim, adding that he told S A he did not mean to interfere and all he wanted to do was to read in peace.
A Y told prosecutors that shortly after, S A stopped him again in the hallway and stabbed him with a small, sharp object.
“I fell to the ground and one prisoner helped me to the guards’ office who sent me to hospital,” said A Y.
Prison guard M M, 35, told prosecutors he saw A Y standing at his door bleeding and called for an ambulance.
The next hearing will be on March 24 to summon S A from his prison cell.
