Dubai in frame with landmark tower

A monumental "picture frame" capturing the Dubai skyline from Zabeel Park is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Formerly called the "Dubai Frame", the Dh120 million project is now named "Dubai LandMark" or "Al Berwaz Tower", according to Wam, the state news agency.

Officials expect work to start on the frame within four months.

The "Dubai Frame" was originally announced in 2009, when it won a government-initiated competition for a new emblematic structure.

Conceived by the architect Fernando Donis, the 150-metre tall and 105-metre wide "frame" was selected from 926 designs submitted to the competition.

The design included lifts in each vertical shaft and an observation deck at the top. It also included an underground car park, a library in the base of the structure and a terrace cafe on the top cross-beam.

Dubai Municipality director general, Hussein Nasser Lootah, recently briefed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai, on the project, according to Wam.Sheikh Mohammed ordered its implementation.

The project is expected to attract "about two million visitors and tourists", according to Wam. The agency did not specify a time-frame for that statistic.

Mr Donis received a US$100,000 (Dh367,251) prize for winning the competition. The design was completed with the help of Werner Sobek, a German engineering consultancy with offices in Dubai.

In a description of the project on the architectural firm's website, the architect said: "Dubai is a city full of emblems. Rather than adding one, we propose to frame them all: to frame the city. Rather than building a massive structure, the purpose of this project is to build a void."

Difference between fractional ownership and timeshare

Although similar in its appearance, the concept of a fractional title deed is unlike that of a timeshare, which usually involves multiple investors buying “time” in a property whereby the owner has the right to occupation for a specified period of time in any year, as opposed to the actual real estate, said John Peacock, Head of Indirect Tax and Conveyancing, BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem & Associates, a law firm.

Uefa Nations League: How it works

The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.

The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.

Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
