Some of the world’s leading politicians, strategists and economists will gather in Dubai on Wednesday to discuss the state of the world and what can be expected next year.
At the 11th Arab Strategy Forum, speakers will discuss mega-trends and forecast the future of economics and government policies in the region.
“It’s an opportunity to better understand the state of the world and the Arab region through analysing economic and political indicators as well as strategic future shifts,” said Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future and Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Forum.
He said the Arab Strategy Forum was launched to serve as a platform for balanced analyses by decision makers to offer a clearer understanding of the economic and political outlook for the Arab region and the world at large.
“As part of this mandate, year on year, the Forum releases a series of economic and political reports and studies, in addition to hosting high profile intellectuals who add value to its future-focused thought sessions,” the minister said.

He emphasised the significance of the forum in anticipating challenges, recognising opportunities, and maintaining development paths.
“The Arab Strategy Forum has become a much-awaited global platform for the transparent and healthy exchange of ideas and opinions that contribute to drawing a road map for future global action,” he said.
Since the inaugural event in 2001, which was launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the forum has provided annual forecasts of major events.
Some of the highlights of this year’s forum include panel discussions and forums to explore what is next for the economy in the Arab world.
Wednesday’s event will feature speakers such as Dr Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia; Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, World Bank Group senior vice president; Bernardino Leon, director general of the Emirates Diplomatic Academy; and Dr Ayad Allawi, former prime minister of Iraq and leader of the National Accord party.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
- Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
- Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
- Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
- Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
- Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Know before you go
- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.
