DUBAI // A man who was accused of raping a female friend in her bedroom was instead convicted for consensual sex outside of wedlock.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Monday, A K, 29, from Kyrgyzstan, was sentenced to three months in jail.

He was invited by D G, 25, a Russian, to her house on Christmas Eve last year because he was depressed at not being able to find a job.

“He was talking about his bad luck in finding a job then told me that he was jumping from one friend’s house to another to sleep as he had no apartment,” she said.

“So I invited him to sleep at my place as my roommate was away.”

They watched TV before going to the bedroom at 2.30am.

“I had two separate beds in the room but he sat beside me and then he restrained me and raped me. I was crying and begging him to stop but he didn’t,” she said.

She said she eventually fled to the house of a friend, who advised her to call police. The man was arrested a few days later.

During police and prosecution investigations, he denied raping her saying they had had consensual intercourse after the woman drank two glasses of vodka.

The court said no evidence of rape was found and the woman had joined the two beds together.

She is not believed to have been charged with consensual sex.

He will be deported after completing his jail term.
