DUBAI // Three labourers beat a colleague with an iron bar after he asked them to take off their shoes when they came into his room, a court heard.

MK, 26, and FT, 33, from India, who were drunk, insulted their compatriot TA following his request, and when he threatened to report them to police they took off their shoes and beat him with them. A third labourer LD, 39, then walked in and joined the assault, holding the man as the other two labourers hit him.

“I fell to the ground and tried to run towards the door but they caught me, locked the door and started hitting me with an iron bar,” said the man.

Eventually he managed to escape and call the police.

Officers arrested two of the men at the labour camp in Jebel Ali, but the third had run away. He was arrested a few days later.

The attack, which took place on March 29 this year, caused the man to lose full mobility in one of his fingers.

At the Criminal Court MK and FT confessed to charges of assault, insult and consuming alcohol without a licence. LD denied charges of assault and issuing insults.

A verdict is expected on December 17.
