DUBAI // A Chinese tourist given a life term for attacking a policeman during a drug bust has had his sentence upheld by the Court of Appeals.

DS, 30, was arrested on December 29 last year near a hotel in Al Raffa following a tip-off that he was selling methamphetamine — also known as crystal meth.

“During the arrest he assaulted officer YA, causing him hand injuries,” police lieutenant TM, 34, told the court. “But we managed to restrain him eventually and take him into custody.”

During interrogations, DS confessed that he was working for MS, 50, also from China, who collected money from his drug sales.

“We found him hiding some of the drugs in his pocket and the remainder in his underwear,” added TM.

The tourist cooperated with police and arranged a meeting with MS the day after his arrest.

“They met near Al Futtaim mosque in Naif and there we arrested MS,” said the lieutenant.

In records, MS denied knowing anything about the drugs, claiming she only met DS to lend him some money.

MS and DS were charged with possessing 16.3 grams of crystal meth to sell. DS was also charged with resisting police, assaulting a police officer and consuming drugs.

He was convicted of all charges and sentenced to life in jail, to be followed by deportation and was fined Dh50,000.

MS was acquitted.
