DUBAI // A girl spotted drag racing at an "insane speed" and then trying to flee police is among the traffic offences committed over the Eid Al Adha holiday.
In total, more than 2,700 traffic tickets have been issued and 48 cars have been seized in Dubai, police said, due to violations ranging from road stunts to driving a vehicle with an expired registration.
Some young motorists were caught performing stunts such as driving their vehicles on two wheels or going against oncoming traffic, according to Col Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, the deputy head of traffic in Dubai.
The girl was spotted drag racing in the Al Khawaneej 2 area of Dubai last week, The National's Arabic sister paper Al Ittihad reported. Usually, underground drag racing in the UAE is primarily a male pastime.
When police approached she turned off the car's lights and drove against oncoming traffic in a bid to lose the police patrol car pursuing her, Col Al Mazrouei said.
After being pulled over, she was issued with five tickets, including one for driving with an expired registration.
