DUBAI // Dominic De Sousa, a prominent figure in Dubai’s media industry, died on stage on Wednesday night during an event he was hosting.
De Sousa, 56, the chairman and founder of the CPI Group, was hosting the BBC Good Food Awards at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray Hotel when he collapsed on stage of what appeared to be a heart attack, according to sources in his company.
“He was the opening act and was scheduled to sing four songs. He sang his first song and then something went wrong after that,” said Nadeem Hood, CPI Media’s chief executive and a friend of De Sousa.
Police are investigating the cause of death.
Friends described him as a larger-than-life character who died doing what he loved most. De Sousa liked to entertain during his company’s events.
“I have never witnessed such outpouring of love for a single person in my life.” A friend said yesterday. “I knew him from one magazine to 16, but he was always the same humble person.
“He will remain a legend in the region’s publishing industry.”
De Sousa was born in Kenya to a Brazilian father and Goan mother. He founded the publishing firm CPI in the early 1990s. A public memorial service will be held on Saturday December 19 at 2pm at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Jebel Ali.

What is graphene?
Graphene is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon.
It is 200 times more resistant than steel and five times lighter than aluminum.
It conducts electricity better than any other material at room temperature.
It is thought that graphene could boost the useful life of batteries by 10 per cent.
Graphene can also detect cancer cells in the early stages of the disease.
The material was first discovered when Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were 'playing' with graphite at the University of Manchester in 2004.

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.
