DUBAI// Dh6 million has been donated to the Reading Nation Ramadan campaign meaning thousands more books can go to those in need.

Dubai Duty Free donated Dh3 million with the rest coming from a philanthropist who wished to remain anonymous.

The campaign was launched on the first day of Ramadan by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

It aims to distribute five million books to refugee camps and underprivileged students in schools around the world.

“The participation of Dubai Duty Free in the Reading Nation campaign and this altruistic gesture reflect a strong commitment to social responsibility and reinforce the entity’s sustained support to humanitarian efforts launched in Dubai and the wider UAE,” said Tariq Al Gurg, chief executive of Dubai Cares who received a cheque for the from Colm McLoughlin, chief executive of Dubai Duty Free.

“DDF has consistently transcended borders and geographies in supporting underprivileged people across the world.”

As more individuals, companies and organisations come forward to help, the campaign is quickly gathering momentum and is on track to hit its target, he said.

“We will continue to work relentlessly with our partners and stakeholders until we see the realisation of our ambitious plans for the benefit of the children of the world,” he said.

Mr McLoughlin praised the initiative describing it as a “first-of-its-kind” which compliments previous campaigns launched by Sheikh Mohammed.

“We are honoured to partner with this campaign in line with our commitment to social responsibility principles that contribute to the UAE’s goal of extending a helping hand to those less fortunate — no matter where they live and who they may be.”

The Reading Nation campaign will continue until the 19th day of Ramadan, which coincides with UAE Humanitarian Day.
