AJMAN// Twenty tonnes of banned sandalwood worth more than Dh2 million were seized by Ajman Ports and Customs.

Containers filled with the wood were brought from China into the emirate by a European man using fake documents, said Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Noaimi, head of Customs Inspections Section at Ajman Ports and Customs.

Inspectors opened the containers, which arrived in Ajman in September last year, and tested the wood. The results confirmed it was sandalwood.

Mr Al Noaimi said inspectors find many banned items hidden in containers.

“Beside sandalwood there are counterfeit goods, illegal fishing nets made of nylon that can catch tiny fish, ivory, as well as endangered birds,” he said.
