AJMAN // A baby girl less than a week old has been found abandoned at a mosque in Ajman.
The baby was yesterday being cared for at Sheikh Khalifa Hospital and was said to be healthy.
She was found in the women's section of the mosque in Manama by a woman arriving for Fajr prayers on Tuesday morning.
The baby, of Asian-Arab origin, was covered in a blanket and likely to have been abandoned by a worshipper minutes after the morning call for prayer, police said.
There has been a spate of abandoned babies in the Northern Emirates in recent months. In July, two babies were found in Sharjah, one in Azzrah and the other in Zubair two days later.
Police have succeeded in apprehending parents of abandoned babies. Last year, the parents of two babies left in a Sharjah mosque were arrested, and Ajman police detained the parents of a baby girl discovered in a basket in 2009.
