Teen trafficked to UAE, court told

DUBAI // Three people deceived, lured and attempted to force a young girl into prostitution, a Dubai Court heard this morning.

The businessman FA, 51, from Palestine was charged in the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance with trafficking a 19-year-old Moroccan and confining her between May 11 and June 9.

A Moroccan woman identified as HL and an unidentified man known only as F remain at large in the crime.

FA denied the charges before Judge Maher Al Mahdi.

The 19-year-old was lured from Morocco with promises of a job in Dubai, but was asked to sign a cheque worth Dh5,000 before her travel, prosecution records show.

Prosecutors said she arrived at Dubai International Airport on May 11 and was taken to a flat in Deira. Then she was told she would work in prostitution, and her passport and travel documents were taken.

When she refused to work, she was threatened with being sent back to Morocco, where she would face jail because of the cheque she signed.

The 19-year-old told prosecutors she contacted her mother in Morocco, who gave her the number of a friend in Sharjah who could help her.

"I contacted the woman in Sharjah and told her what had happened," she told prosecutors.

She said she eventually escaped when one of the other women in the flat distracted her captors.

FA was arrested on July 20, records show.

The next hearing will be on November 20.

Iran's dirty tricks to dodge sanctions

There’s increased scrutiny on the tricks being used to keep commodities flowing to and from blacklisted countries. Here’s a description of how some work.

1 Going Dark

A common method to transport Iranian oil with stealth is to turn off the Automatic Identification System, an electronic device that pinpoints a ship’s location. Known as going dark, a vessel flicks the switch before berthing and typically reappears days later, masking the location of its load or discharge port.

2. Ship-to-Ship Transfers

A first vessel will take its clandestine cargo away from the country in question before transferring it to a waiting ship, all of this happening out of sight. The vessels will then sail in different directions. For about a third of Iranian exports, more than one tanker typically handles a load before it’s delivered to its final destination, analysts say.

3. Fake Destinations

Signaling the wrong destination to load or unload is another technique. Ships that intend to take cargo from Iran may indicate their loading ports in sanction-free places like Iraq. Ships can keep changing their destinations and end up not berthing at any of them.

4. Rebranded Barrels

Iranian barrels can also be rebranded as oil from a nation free from sanctions such as Iraq. The countries share fields along their border and the crude has similar characteristics. Oil from these deposits can be trucked out to another port and documents forged to hide Iran as the origin.
