DUBAI // A labourer who groped a woman because she smiled at him has been sentenced to three months in prison.
RB, 26, from India, followed the woman to her apartment after meeting her at a supermarket in International City on March 3 this year.
The Filipina, 29, was shopping when the man stopped her and asked if she could find him a job at her company. She agreed and gave him her phone number before leaving to go home.
"When I entered my building and headed to the lift, he followed me then touched my hair saying I had beautiful hair," recalled the Filipina. "I pushed his hand away and jumped out of the lift to rush to my flat."
When she arrived at her apartment and reached for her key, he groped her left breast.
The man ran away when the woman screamed loudly. The woman then called police.
The Criminal Court found the man guilty on a charge of sexual assault. He had admitted following and touching the woman, saying he did so because she repeatedly smiled at him, but he claimed he touched only her shoulder.
He will be deported after completing his jail term.
