DUBAI // A teenager threw an improvised gas bomb into the kitchen of his girlfriend's family home after being told that he would not be allowed to marry her, a court heard yesterday. AK, a 19-year-old Emirati, asked repeatedly for the Indian girl's hand in marriage but her mother continually turned him down, prosecutors told the Criminal Court of First Instance. The 44-year-old mother told prosecutors that AK eventually resorted to threatening her, and told her he would burn down her house with her and her husband inside it.
On February 6, while the woman and her children were asleep at their home in Al Beda, she said she was awoken by an explosion in her kitchen. She told prosecutors that she gathered her children and went to where the fire was. "After we put out the fire in the kitchen, I went outside and I saw AK," she said. She told prosecutors that as AK was running off he told her: "You saw me burn your house down. Marry your daughter to me."
Forensic investigations show a lit gas bottle was thrown into the kitchen through the room's fan. Prosecutors also told the court that AK, who has a criminal record, refused to cooperate with prosecution investigators. AK denied arson and the court adjourned the hearing to October 19.
