Reformed UAE terror convicts to be released from prison in Eid initiative

UAE Attorney General, Dr Hamad Al Shamsi, has introduced a new federal prosecution division dedicated to cases involving children and families. 

A number of terror convicts have been pardoned by President Sheikh Khalifa in an effort to help them "blend back into society", said the UAE's attorney general.

Dr Hamad Al Shamsi, confirmed on Monday that inmates serving time for terrorism offences are among the 669 prisoners to be released ahead of Eid Al Adha by order of Sheikh Khalifa.

Sheikh Khalifa also pledged to settle the financial obligations of those being freed, in an announcement made by state news agency, Wam, on Sunday.

The specific number of terror convicts to be released was not disclosed. The nationalities of the prisoners were also not revealed.

Dr Al Shamsi said those imprisoned for terror-related crimes had undergone deradicalisation programmes before being approved for release.

“Even if they had committed a mistake and perverted from the right path, once they have returned to the correct path, their homeland welcomes them with open arms,” he said.

“We hope they will serve their society and follow the laws, thriving for a better future.”

Dr Al Shamsi said it was hoped the gesture would encourage other inmates convicted of similar crimes to give up their “destructive ideas and search for the righteous understanding of religion”.

Rulers of the Emirates traditionally pardon hundreds of prisoners during Ramadan and other religious holidays.

More than 4,000 prisoners were released during the Holy Month this year.
