DUBAI // A man was convicted yesterday of smuggling more than six kilograms of hashish into the country.
JS, 63, from Qatar, was sentenced to 10 years in prison a Dh100,000 fine. When he appeared before the Dubai Criminal Court, he denied charges of smuggling and possessing 6,076 kg of hashish as well as 145 grams of amphetamines.
"His confession during police investigations was taken under force as he was beaten by police who smashed his teeth and jaw and caused him bruising all over his body," the defendant's defence lawyer, Eisa Bin Hayder, told the court. He asked the presiding judge to order a forensic examination of his client.
AM, an Emirati border inspector, testified that there was information that the defendant would be trying to cross the border carrying the drugs in September.
"He was stopped along with another man and four bullets were found in their car," AM said.
He added that four bags of hashish were found in the car with 800 tablets of Captagon that were hidden in the car's air filter.
Records said more than Dh30,000 was found with the defendant that might be drug money.
JS will be deported after completing his prison term.
