DUBAI // An electrician's assistant sold pornographic films to workers for Dh2 a DVD on his weekends, a court heard this morning.

MJ, 28, Bangladeshi, admitted to the charge before the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours this morning and said he needed the money to support his wife and family back home. He was sentenced to two months in prison plus deportation.

"My employer hasn't given me my salary for the past six months," MJ said.

Prosecutors said that on July 8, police were patrolling the bus station in Al Muhaisnah 2 area when they spotted MJ selling items to workers about 7.30pm.

The officers questioned him and he admitted to the sales on the spot, handing them 277 CDs and Dh100 note he had earned that day.

During investigations, he said he took the DVDs from an Indian man and a Bangladeshi man who supplied and traded in illegal videos.

"My need for money is what had me do this," he told prosecutors, adding that he knew what he was doing was illegal.

He said he bought the DVDs for Dh1.50 sold them for Dh2.
