Man who attacked wife at Dubai home in front of their son handed jail reprieve

A man who attacked his wife with a clothes hanger in front of their teenage son has been spared jail.

The Emirati, 43, assaulted the woman at their family home in Al Qusais, Dubai last May - before the couple's 16-year-old son came to his mother's aid after hearing her screams.

The Iranian woman, 31, had fled to Ajman after the attack and filed a complaint against her husband with police.

She told the court during the initial hearing that her husband had also threatened to kill her.

“He hit me in front of our son and insulted me using inappropriate language,” she told the court.

He was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of physical assault, issuing insults and death threats at Dubai Criminal Court in October.

But the jail term has been reduced to a three-month suspended sentence at Dubai Court of Appeal.

He must still pay compensation of Dh21,000 and another Dh10,000 in legal fees ordered at the previous court hearing.
