Man admits fake passports, denies using them for fraud

Prosecutors say he used the documents to buy SIM cards, which he resold on the black market.

DUBAI // A man denied using copies of a forged passport to deceive Emarat Telecom into issuing him post-paid SIM cards, a Dubai court heard this morning.

OS, 28, from Pakistan told the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance he admitted to the forgery, saying heplaced his photograph on top of the original picture, then made copies. But, he told the court, he did not present the passport to Emirat Telecom on October 14, 2010.

Prosecutors accused him of writing different names on the applications and signing them.

MA, 55, also from Pakistan, denied aiding and abetting OS.

According to records, OS was arrested following a tip to police that he carried three passports with different names.

AA, a police officer, said a source provided them with copies of the forged passports, after which OS was arrested.

Prosecutors said he obtained the SIM cards, then sold them to others. They said he confessed to all charges during the investigation.

A verdict is expected on April 5.
