DUBAI // A cleaner who stole from a charity box at Dubai Courts has been sentenced to three months in prison.
SH, 26, from Bangladesh, stayed late on March 12 to ensure all the other workers had left before breaking into the box opposite the first floor prayer room.
The next day a department manager noticed the box was empty and became suspicious. "I would see 100 and 200 bills inside the box on daily basis so I felt something was wrong and I reported my suspicions to the central services section," recalled the manager.
Surveillance cameras showed the cleaner turning off the lights at 8.20pm and taking the box, which was full of money, into a room. When he returned the box was empty.
When police searched the cleaner they found Dh4,360 hidden in his right sock. He claimed it was his money and that the money he stole from the box had already been spent.
The Criminal Court found him guilty of a theft. He will be deported after serving his prison term.
