DUBAI // A ringing intercom saved a maid from being raped by a man at the villa in which they both worked, a court has heard.

The Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the Indian HK, 22, followed the Indonesian maid to the villa's kitchen about 9am on May 25.

He violently grabbed TP, 27, kissed her, threw her to the floor, then took off her trousers and underwear, court records show.

TP told prosecutors she resisted him fiercely and began to scream. When the intercom in the kitchen rang, HK panicked and ran, she said.

FK, another maid at the house, testified she was nursing her sponsor's child when she heard TP scream, so she could not go to her straight away.

Ten minutes later she went to the kitchen and saw TP pulling up her trousers and sobbing.

"She told me what had happened and I informed the sponsor's wife, who called her husband," FK said.

The husband returned home and called police.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 10.
