DUBAI // A security guard found guilty of sexually assaulting a fellow labourer was sentenced to one year in prison this morning.
The 38-year-old Pakistani guard JH gained access to the room of the 22-year-old Chinese labourer JY at about 6pm on an unspecified day in February by pretending he needed to take some measurements, prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court.
JY went to sleep after turning down a request from the guard to help him with the measuring.
The labourer said JH later awakened him, offering to give him a free massage. The guard then locked the door and pushed the labourer's face into the bed before pulling down his underwear and molesting him.
The labourer said he resisted and managed to shake off the guard before rushing out of the room. He then informed police.
The guard denied a sexual assault charge and presented the Dubai Criminal Court with a waiver from the labourer.
JH will be deported after serving his prison term.

Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Its motto is ‘open doors, open minds’. All year-round, visitors can sign up for a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch or dinner meal, as well as a range of walking tours, including ones to sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque or Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.

Heavily-sugared soft drinks slip through the tax net
Some popular drinks with high levels of sugar and caffeine have slipped through the fizz drink tax loophole, as they are not carbonated or classed as an energy drink.
Arizona Iced Tea with lemon is one of those beverages, with one 240 millilitre serving offering up 23 grams of sugar - about six teaspoons.

Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican.
