An Asian worker in Fujairah is on trial for seriously injuring his colleague with the shovel of the excavator he was driving.
Both workers were at a construction site when the African victim was hit in the stomach by the digger’s sharp edges.
During maintenance work, the accused made a mistake while fixing the excavator that caused the accident, said prosecutors at Fujairah Misdemeanour Court.
The Asian told the court that he operated and drove the excavator while the victim paved the road, the Arabic-language newspaper Emarat Al Youm reported.
“The excavator suddenly stopped working so I had to change the battery,” the accused told the court.
“While I was changing the battery the excavator accidentally started working and unintentionally injured the victim in the stomach,” he said.
The court heard two other workers, who were witnesses. Both confirmed the negligence of the Asian.
The victim accused the Asian of malicious intent.
The hearing has been adjourned until next week when a verdict is expected.
