Five men have gone on trial in Dubai accused of possessing a massive haul of more than three million amphetamine tablets.

The Arab men were planning to ship the drugs to a neighbouring Gulf country for a Dh200,000 payment when their plot was uncovered by police, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

A police investigation revealed that one of the five drivers was a member of an international drug ring operating in three different countries, according to Al Bayan newspaper.

Anti-narcotics officers received information about the location of one of the defendants and tracked him down, finding he was driving in a suspicious manner.

Police said that they followed him to Al Mattenah and swooped when he pulled over next to a building.

Two bags were found in his vehicle, containing half a ton of round-shaped tablets, which turned out to be psychotropic substances, said the police.

The defendant was planning to hand over the bills to the third and the fourth defendants before he got caught.

The case is proceeding.
