A worker stabbed a colleague to death in an act of "self defence", Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The 27-year-old admitted killing the victim - who was one of a group of five men who had attacked him at their shared labour accommodation in Jebel Ali - but insisted he did not intend to end his life.

The initial assault was captured on CCTV, but the fatal blow was not part of the surveillance footage.

The incident occurred on December 20 of last year.

The age and nationality of the deceased was not disclosed in court.

“We checked the surveillance cameras in the Jebel Ali labour accommodation where the incident happened,” said a police lieutenant.

“But the stabbing itself was not in the CCTV footage because it had happened in a location that was not covered with cameras.”

A supervisor at the accommodation said the group had planned their attack on the Nepalese man and had chased him into the toilets.

“He acted in self defense,” said the Pakistani supervisor.

The defendant admitted charges of physical assault causing death and consuming alcohol without a licence.

The case was adjourned until March 31.
