Drunk driver jailed for running over a pedestrian

A driver who ran over and killed a pedestrian in Al Qusais has been jailed for a year and fined Dh20,000.

DUBAI // A driver who ran over and killed a pedestrian in Al Qusais was yesterday jailed for a year and fined Dh20,000.

Dubai Traffic Court also ordered the 46-year-old Indian MY to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the family of the Pakistani ML and ordered the suspension of his driving licence for a year. The driver was also banned from renewing his licence for one year after its expiration.

The driver was drunk when he lost control of his car on Algeria Road at about 3.30pm on an undisclosed day in February last year and hit the pedestrian, who was standing on the pavement.

The driver fled but was arrested by police within 15 minutes. He was charged with causing the death of a person, driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene.

The pedestrian was rushed to hospital but he died on the way.

In the first quarter of 2012, traffic prosecution investigated 326 people accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, and 34 people accused of causing the death of others.
