A Canadian filed a civil case for Dh11.9 million against a Russian investor who it is claimed has links to the Chechen president before he was threatened by an Australian hitman, a court heard on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old Canadian said that, after filing the case, he received a call from an Australian man in January, who told him that he hurts people for a living.
“He told me he hurt many people in Australia and that he was assigned to harm my family. Then he sent me pictures of my parents and other family members and locations of their offices as well as my passport copy to confirm to me that he can reach them,” said the man.
He added that the caller told him that the threats were serious and would be followed through unless he dropped the case against the Russian.
“No, not at all,” said the 40-year-old Australian defendant in court, denying a charge of issuing threats.
The investor, 38, denied a charge of aiding and abetting the Australian defendant.
Prosecutors said they found the pictures on the defendant’s phone, as well as several chats relating to the financial case.
During prosecution investigations, the Australian defendant allegedly confessed to making contact with people and ordering them to hurt the Canadian and his family and negotiating over the civil case. It is also claimed he said that the victim would settle for Dh9m.
The investor allegedly said to the Canadian that he was powerful because he is related to the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyro, and that he can hurt him.
Both men denied charges in court on Tuesday.
The next hearing is on August 22.

What is Genes in Space?
Genes in Space is an annual competition first launched by the UAE Space Agency, The National and Boeing in 2015.
It challenges school pupils to design experiments to be conducted in space and it aims to encourage future talent for the UAE’s fledgling space industry. Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

How tumultuous protests grew

The tiny ration of heated water provided for our bath in our makeshift private bathroom stall was the greatest luxury. A standard package, also based on a 4-person booking, works out to $3,050 (Dh11,202) per person.
When to go: You can climb Kili at any time of year, but the best months to ascend are January-February and September-October. Also good are July and August, if you’re tolerant of the colder weather that winter brings.
Do not underestimate the importance of kit. Even if you’re travelling at a relatively pleasant time, be geared up for the cold and the rain.
