Briton accused of going on naked beach run

The man accused of running naked on a public beach pleads not guilty to violating public decency, claiming his bathing suit fell off.

ABU DHABI // A British man accused of running naked on a public beach has pleaded not guilty to violating public decency. GK, a naturalised British citizen of Lebanese decent, appeared before the Abu Dhabi Court of Misdemeanours yesterday. He was accused of running naked on the Ras al Akhdar public beach on June 16. He has been held in jail since then. He told the court his bathing suit fell off while he was swimming. "I reject all this - I did not run naked on the beach," he told the court in Arabic. "My bathing suit just fell down and I immediately put it back on and apologised."According to his lawyer, Faiza Moussa, GK's bathing suit fell off as he was exiting the water. "It happened because the water was moving fast back and forth," said Ms Moussa. "It was not his intent."

Ms Moussa said immediately after the incident GK waved to a man near him on the beach and apologised. "Somebody did not like that and they called the police," said Ms Moussa, adding that her client "told the police and the public prosecutors it was accidental; he did not intend to commit any offence and therefore he should be acquitted". Ms Moussa also requested that her client be granted bail. If convicted, GK could be jailed for up to three months and fined Dh5,000. A representative from the British Embassy was present at the hearing. The judge adjourned the case until Wednesday.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.

Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.

For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.

Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.

At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.
