Somewhere in the background, a sporting tournament is taking place.

But sometimes it is all too easy to confuse the Dubai Rugby Sevens with a fancy dress party, as these pictures by Satish Kumar, a photojournalist with The National, show.

The official Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Seven onesie – in national colours, with long and short versions – made its debut at this year’s competition.

Local costume shops reported a brisk trade in figure-hugging “morphsuits” and outfits made of Astroturf with rugby balls attached.

The Rugby Sevens, launched in 1966, are regarded as one of Dubai’s biggest sporting tournaments – if not its biggest party.

The slogan for this year’s event was “Everybody Play” – and so they did.
