In 1993, when this photograph was taken, there were two reasons to celebrate January 1. The day was not only the start of a new year but it also marked the opening of Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.
The club is situated in Deira overlooking the Creek and its clubhouse design echoes the sails of a traditional Arabian dhow.
Fireworks marked the opening of the club that day. In the years since, Dubai has witnessed the construction of more landmarks such as Atlantis the Palm, Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa – places synonymous with epic New Year’s Eve fireworks displays, which millions of people both here and around the world will watch tonight.
